The President is directly elected for a five-year term and appoints the Prime Minister subject to parliamentary approval. The Verkhovna Rada is a unicameral parliament; the Cabinet of Ministers is responsible for executive government. Elections for the President, Verkhovna Rada and local bodies are prohibited while martial law is in force.
