Legislative Assembly 57 seats · 4-year term · Proportional representation by province using quotient, subquotient and largest remainder; party lists are used.

Costa Rica has a presidential system with no separately elected prime minister: the president is both head of state and head of government. The president and two vice presidents are elected together by popular vote; a ticket must exceed 40% of valid votes, otherwise a runoff is held. National elections are held every four years, normally on the first Sunday of February.
