National Assembly 240 seats · 4-year term · Proportional representation from candidate lists in multi-member constituencies, with optional preference voting; seats allocated using the Hare-Niemeyer method

The President and Vice President are directly elected together for five-year terms by a two-round majoritarian system and may be re-elected once. The Prime Minister is not directly elected nationally; the National Assembly elects the government. Voting is legally described as compulsory, but sanctions for non-voting were declared unconstitutional and are not operative.
