  • Senate 60 seats · Indirectly designated: 50 senators are appointed by Community and Regional Parliaments, and 10 are co-opted on the basis of Chamber election results.

Belgium is a federal parliamentary monarchy: the King is head of state, while the Prime Minister heads a government that must obtain the confidence of the Chamber of Representatives. The Senate is not directly elected; federal and European parliamentary elections normally follow a five-year cycle. Belgian citizens may vote from age 16 in European Parliament elections, although the general federal voting age is 18.
